Ask Taima: Curly Hair Don't Care

3/28/2013

Let me start by saying that I do love my hair on most days . It can be a lot of work though which is why it often gets pulled back into a bun. So many have asked how do I manage to keep my hair so healthy and the answer is simple. I don't really use that many products in my hair. You will be surprised to know what I actually use so I decided to share it with you all.

(1) Shampoo and Conditioner

I try not to wash my hair too often because curly hair can get very dry but when I do I use Shampoo and Conditioner from Trader Joe's. Yes you read correctly. Amazon has them for 9.99 a pop but I actually pay 2.99 at the store. Not sure why it is so expensive on Amazon.  TiP: I don't always wash out the conditioner. I usually will detangle in the shower using the conditioner and just squeeze out the remaining water and wrap my hair in a towel to soak up the excess water. I then let it air dry so I treat the conditioner like a leave in.

(2) Leave In Conditioner

I use Dominican Conditioner as my leave in. This product is not intended to be a leave in but when mixed with a little bit of water it is perfect for my thirsty strands. I split my hair into four parts and comb it through. I then let my hair air dry and I am left with what you see in the picture.  TIP: This is great for the beach since salt water and sun can really dry your hair out. I usually throw into my beach bag and coat my hair with some conditioner after swimming. Not only does it allow me to get away with half decent beach hair but it keeps my hair from drying out.

(3) Curl Refresher

In between washes I spritz my hair with a combination of aloe vera juice and coconut oil. I mix equal parts into a spray bottle and spritz away. This is a great way to refresh my curls without having to put any chemicals or rewash it. It doesn't matter the brand as long as it is natural and does not contain any other funky ingredients.

So the secret is out. This is my hair routine. It's that simple. Now I have to stop being soo lazy and actually do something other than wrapping it up in a bun.

A couple of weekends ago I went to Palisades Mall with the fam. While DH and company went rope climbing I checked out the new Uniqlo that just opened up. Let me start by saying that I have been a fan of Uniqlo since I stumbled upon it on a trip to Tokyo several years ago. I cannot even tell you how happy I am that they are now in the states. Here is what I picked up from Uniqlo. Of course everything was on sale.

Light Pink Skinny Jeans 9.90 Retail Price 19.90 (50% savings)

So my grand total for the day was $93.80. Can you believe it. I got 10 pieces for under $100. Average savings was 55% off. I saved over $100.  Another successful shopping trip. Now I have to figure out how to fit this all in my insanely crowded closet.

Jeans and a T-Shirt Part II

Continuing with my Jeans and T-Shirt challenge I decided to change things up with a green velvet blazer and nude peep toes. Even though it is Spring it is still very cold in the northeast so I am getting a little bit of extra mileage out of my winter pieces.

I am soo excited about my nude peep toes. I tried these on a while back and could not find my size at any store. Can you believe I was willing to pay full price for these because I think they are the perfect "nude".  During post Christmas sales I found these on sale on Bluefly and had to snatch them up. I ended up paying almost half price.  That worked out pretty well for me.  Though shall not pay retail of  anything.

Even thought it doesn't feel like it Spring is finally here. Unfortunately we are dealing with yet another snow storm so I guess I should just start looking forward to Summer.  This week was all about food. For some reason all my Instagram was dominated by what I was cooking or eating. How did your week go?
Picture
Day 77: I started of the week with Greek Chicken Pasta. It was a quick to put together and it actually came out pretty good. Will definitely make it again. You can find the recipe here.

Picture
Day 79: I am so thankful for a husband that actually knows how to cook. It is soo nice to come home and see this in the kitchen. I of course was on the couch sipping on some wine and relaxing. Life is good.
Picture
Day 81: Friday night we ventured into the city for dinner and drinks at Lupa.  The food was good but be forewarned it is very rich. Otherwise this was a very fun place. The music was good and upbeat. Definitely not boring.
Picture
Day 83: I really wish the weather would warm up just slightly so that I can bring out my spring gear. I am soo over these below freezing temps. I gave up on the fight and just layered up for Sunday Funday.
Picture
Day 78: Tuesday night was fajita night. I was actually on planning on preparing something else but we were short on time and ingredients so fajitas it was. Fajitas are another great weeknight meal. It took me about 20 minutes to put this together. Recipe can be found here.
Picture
Day 80: I am soooo excited for baseball and summer. I CANNOT WAIT!!!!!!!

Picture
Day 82: After spending the day on  a thrift shopping crawl we filled up on some Sushi in the Gramercy area. I have not seen Kaiten-zushi (sushi on a conveyor belt) since I was in Tokyo so I was extremely excited to see this when we walked in. Brought back some great memories. Can't wait to go back to Japan one day.

Jeans and a T-Shirt Part I

Everyone should have a great pair of jeans and white t-shirt in their closet. It is a great starting point for a casual outfit. On it's own a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt may not exactly wow you but throw on your favorite pair of shoes and your trusty blazer and you have yourself a pulled together look.

I decided take on a  Jeans and White T-Shirt challenge by trying to put together 5 looks starting with a pair of blue jeans and a white t-shirt.

My favorite part of this first look are the shoes. (You all know I loooove shoes). I originally wore this outfit with leopard flats for a night out but decided to step it up with my leopard booties.  Now lets be honest. These shoes were not made for walking the cobbled stone streets of  the Meat Packing District. They are best for activities which require lots of sitting. They are great indoors on carpeted floors as well.

Stay tuned for more Jeans and T-shirt looks. What is your favorite way to step up your jeans and t-shirt look?

How is it that we are only days away from spring and it is still snowing. Ugghh. I am so ready for warmer temps. I have so many cute outfits I would like to wear without risking frostbite. Here is another week wishing for spring.
Picture
Day 70: Once the temperatures start to warm up I go on my pelligrino binge. It is one of my fav beverages. Unfortunately it is cold again so that will have to wait until it warms up again.
Picture
Day 72: I have been playing out with my layout and think I have settled on this look. What do you think?

Picture
Day 74: Since we went out for dinner on Thursday we spent Friday lounging around the house. Rubi was not all that thrilled to be spending his Friday night with us.
Picture
Day 76:  I really didn't intend to do any shopping but on Sunday I ended up in Palisades mall with the fam. Uniqlo just opened there so I was able to find some goodies there.  I will be posting about what I scored later this week. Great deals as always.
Picture
Day 71: A bath cures all. I celebrated Tuesday with some pinot grigio and mags in a nice warm bubble bath. Just heaven.

Picture
Day 73: On Thursday night we decided to take advantage of Hudson Valley Week and went to Xaviers on the Hudson. I love that place. Food is awesome and the view and sunset was great. I almost felt like I was on vacation for a second. we definitely have to do this more often.
Picture
Day 75: On Saturday night I opted for a quiet dinner out closer to home. Things were too crazy in the city for me but I did dress up for St. Paddy's with my leather pants and green top.

Sunday Brunch

3/14/2013

This past weekend I ventured out to Brooklyn for brunch. It has been sooo long since I have been to Brooklyn for anything so it was a refreshing change. Definitely have to venture out more often.  As for the outfit well lets talk about the fact that I am mixing highs and lows. The jeans are forever 21 and cost me a whooping 3 bucks. The denim shirt is from ross and set me back about 12 bucks. And the shoes are my splurge. They are Alexandre Birman and I love them lots. Fortunately for me I also got them on sale at the end of the season. They retail for close to $600  but I got them for just over $100 brand new at one of my favorite stores in NYC. Roundbout Resale. You have to check them out.

How is it already March? Where did January and February go. Not that I am complaining but I can barely account for anything that has happen during the first two months of the year.  One of my goals this week was to shop my closet. I am guilty of buying buying buying but never having anything to wear. On Sunday night I decided to pick a few pieces that I have not yet worn or have not yet worn this season and create outfits around those pieces. The whole idea was to purge pieces that I either didn't love or couldn't figure out how to style. Let's just say nothing was purged but I did come up with some new ways to wear some of my older pieces. I also came to the realization that although spring is right around the corner and I am super excited about warmer temps I am not so excited about having to put away my boots and unpack all my summer gear. (Boy do I need to find a second home just to house my wardrobe).
Picture
Day 63: Trying to jump back on the #ootd wagon. I am guilty of repeating outfits so this gives me incentive to mix things up and try to recreate a new look with pieces I already own. BTW those boots are Jimmy Choo and I paid less than $200 for them brand new. Gotta love consignment. :)
Picture
Day 65: So on Wednesday we were threatened with a snow storm that took two days to arrive. Even Rubi was growing impatient. I mean I worse these things for three days straight and totally got in the way of my preplanned outfits. Definitely had to make some slight adjustments.
Picture
Day 67: The snow finally arrived on Friday morning. I totally was not expecting to wake up to this but it was beautiful nonetheless. I am hoping this is the last snow fall. I am ready for some beach weather.
Picture
Day 69: I spent my Sunday morning having Brunch in Brooklyn. Made new friends and discovered a new fun brunch spot. Can't wait to check it out again. Stayed tuned for an outfit post later this week. This is another example of how I mix highs and lows.
Picture
Day 64: I did it. I wore plaid and I actually like it. I got a lot of compliments from a lot of men in the outfit. I could not figure out why. Any thoughts. I kept on thinking that maybe I had button undone or something was going on but apparently men like plaid and ruffles. Who thought?
Picture
Day 66: DH decided to give up rice for lent which has been a bit of a challenge for me in the kitchen. Rice is a required part of almost every Puerto Rican meal and one of my favorite foods. I decided to keep in touch with my asian roots and whip up some pan fried noodles and dumplings. Yum.
Picture
Day 68: Have I ever mentioned how much I love food.

I have no self control. I started out saying I was going to go on a shopping diet and two days later I ended up at an outlet mall with a whole lot of bags full of goodies. I will never get over my shopping addiction but I have vowed to try to shop my closet. It is bad when you come home from a day of shopping only to stare at a closet half full of never worn items and have no clue what you are going to wear to work tomorrow. Yeah that is a huge problem. This week I was a good girl and planned all my outfits based around pieces that I either have not worn yet or have not worn within the last year. Let's see how long this challenge lasts. What  kind of tactics do you use to try to keep you out of the malls and shops?

I've been a bad blogger. Life has just taken over and between the gym, work and my social life there has been little time for outfit pics or even writing posts. I promise to get better. This week was all about the things that make me happy.
Picture
Day 56: After bailing on one of the worse dance classes I have ever taken I decided to walk from 54th street to Grand Central. It was nice taking in the city from the eyes of a tourist. I walk down these streets every day but never stop to appreciate what is around me.
Picture
Day 58: Wednesday night was book club. We read This is How you Lose her by Junot Diaz. It was a relatively good book. We ended the night with a treat from Valencia which is a staple in most latin households. Oh yeah and it was Dominican Independence.
Picture
Day 60: You all know I love a good deal. I stopped into the Nordstrom Rack in Union Square on Friday night and scored these Kate Spade sunnies for $25. Great deal.
Picture
Day 62: After my gym class on Sunday I decided to do some shopping down in SoHo. I found this bag at Housing Works. Such a great piece. Unfortunately when I got home I discovered my phone is too big to fit inside. Let's see how that works out.
Picture
Day 57: Have you ever tried these. These are the best things ever. I usually pick them up at the Japanese grocery or in chinatown. I am obsessed.

Picture
Day 59: I have been on a major gym kick and on Thursday nights have been taking a silks class. It is a lot of fun and I am actually starting to get it. It is my new obsession.

Picture
Day 61: Saturday night we attended a wedding which was a great excuse to get dressed up. Don't you love the bow tie.
